Data Sources

Until May 2007, Cervical Cytology Statistics were collected quarterly from laboratories on form ISD(D)1Q and annually from health boards on form ISD(D)4, with data being compiled by the Population Health team in ISD Scotland.

Data for year ending 31st March 2008 onwards are collected by ISD Scotland from the Scottish Cervical Call Recall System (SCCRS).

SCCRS collects information on cervical screening tests carried out in Scotland on a quarterly basis, for periods ending 31st March, 30th June, 30 September and 31st December. It also collects information on cervical screening uptake figures on an annual basis, for years ending 31st March.

Data contained in cervical screening publications from 2008 is extracted from the following reports on SCCRS:

Lab report 09A Collects quarterly data on the number of cervical screening tests processed by laboratory and the results of the screening tests. Prior to 2007/08, similar data was collated from section 2 of the ISD (D) 1Q forms supplied to laboratories to ISD Scotland.

Lab report 004 Collects quarterly data on average turnaround/reporting times for cervical screening tests carried out at each laboratory. The reporting time is defined as the time from the date the sceening test was received by the laboratory to the date the report was issued by the laboratory. Prior to 2007/08, similar data was collected from section 3 of ISD (D) 1Q forms supplied by laboratories to ISD Scotland.

Lab report ISD (D) 4 Collects annual information on cervical screening uptake by NHS Health Board of residence for years ending 31st March. The information collected is based on the resident female population within each health board.

Tables 1 and 2: Collects data on the total number and percentages of woman with a record of a previous smear in the past 5.5. and 3.5 years, cross-tabulated with the age group of the woman from which the smear was taken. Prior to 2007/08, similar data was collected from ISD (D) 4 forms supplied by laboratories to ISD Scotland.
