Drug Related Hospital Statistics

Drug Related Hospital Statistics (DRHS) is an annual report on hospital admissions associated with drug misuse across the NHS in Scotland. The report is based on the following nationally available data sources, collated using information routinely drawn from hospital administrative systems:

  • Hospital data from ISD General Acute Inpatient / Day cases Records (SMR01) - acute inpatient and day case (up to 2016/17);
  • Mental Health Inpatient and Day Case Records (SMR04) - psychiatric inpatient and day case (up to 2015/16).

To allow comparisons between geographical areas that may be different in size and age structure of the population, DRHS indicators are often presented as European Age-sex Standardised Rates (EASR).

For further information on the methodology used, please refer to Section A1 of the DRHS report Download PDF file. [1.3Mb]

The report is accompanied by an electronic dashboard. This provides accessible analyses on the number of drug-related hospital stays, the number and characteristics of patients admitted to hospital in relation to drug misuse, the substances used and the geographical variations within Scotland. Trends for 1996/97 in order to contextualise these data.

The DRHS Dashboard will be updated on an annual basis, alongside the DRHS report, providing users with the latest extension of the time series and allowing further exploration of the health impacts associated with drug misuse.
