Scottish Drug Misuse Database

About the database

The Scottish Drug Misuse Database (SDMD) is an important and widely used national information source on the misuse of drugs in Scotland. The SDMD is based on systematic recording of a national dataset on clients seen at a broad range of services across Scotland. The database holds information on demographic and behavioural characteristics of new clients coming to the attention of medical services (general practice, hospital etc.) and specialist drug services (statutory and non-statutory). The dataset covers:

  • demographic information
  • presenting information
  • prescription profile
  • illicit drug profile
  • injecting/ sharing details
  • social profile
  • dependent children
  • contact with services

The aims of the database are to:

  • monitor presenting problem use
  • collect information about clients presenting to services for assessment of their care/ treatment needs pertaining to drug misuse
  • help identify, or confirm, trends
  • inform discussion about service provision
  • provide data for the Alcohol and Drug Partnerships (ADPs) for taking forward the drug misuse strategy
  • provide information in support of monitoring targets set by the Scottish Government

Electonic data submission

Two methods of electronic data submission are possible in the new system, both of which use a secure internet connection. The first is an online form. Service providers log onto the application and submit data directly to ISD via a web form. The second is a file upload facility within the application. This will allow a local system administrator to log onto the application and submit a batch file of data from their local system directly to ISD, at given points in time.
