2013/14 QOF Prevalence Data

Click on the links below for Excel Download Excel file tables on disease register and prevalence data recorded in QOF for 2013/14. Some of them contain excel macros and you will need to select "enable macros" in order for them to work properly.

Notes on QOF Prevalence Information:

Prevalence is a measure of the burden of a disease or health condition in a population at a particular point in time (and is different to incidence, which is a measure of the number of newly diagnosed cases within a particular time period).

Prevalence data within the QOF are collected in the form of practice "registers". A QOF register may count patients with one specific disease or condition, or it may include multiple conditions. There may also be other criteria for inclusion on a QOF register, such as age or recency of diagnosis.

Caution needs to be taken when interpreting QOF prevalence since the rates are simply the total number of patients on the register, expressed as a proportion or percentage of the total number of patients registered with the practice. They are not adjusted to account for patient age distribution or other factors that may differ between general practices. Furthermore, although registers may be restricted (e.g. to only include persons over a specified age) the QOF prevalence rate is based on the total number of persons registered with the practice (the practice list size) at one point in time.

Comparability with Practice Team Information (PTI) Rates

Practice Team Information (PTI) publish rates of GP consultation for a number of conditions, including some that are also included in this publication. As QOF and PTI essentially measure different things, the figures would not necessarily be expected to be the same. Commentary on the comparability of QOF and PTI rates can be found in the PTI statistics section of the ISD website.

Notes on Using these Files

  • When selecting prevalence data by NHS Board or CHP, you can choose whether to download data only for GMS practices, or for practices with any contract type. The QOF is part of the GMS contract and so practices with other contract types are not automatically expected to take part in it. Non-GMS practices can also vary considerably in the extent to which they use parts or all of the QOF and so sometimes individual practices have data available for individual QOF registers and sometimes they do not. Selecting the any contract type versions of these prevalence files will be preferable to many users, however, as these files give larger and more complete counts of patients on QOF registers. Either version of the files is valid for QOF-reported prevalence rates, but again non-specialist users of this information may prefer to select the any contract type version of the files.
  • Further information on what each QOF register actually counts, and cautionary notes about using QOF prevalence data for other purposes, is given on our web page containing Information for users of QOF register and prevalence data.
  • Data are as at 20 June 2014. It is possible that practice prevalence data may still be subject to revision at local level.
