Women and Children's Health Information Programme

Promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing, of mothers and children are key to preserving the health of current and future generations. The Women and Children's Health Programme is working to support improvements in reproductive and child health in Scotland through the provision of high quality information.

The Programme aims to work collaboratively with its customers to provide a range of information outputs that will support the provision of healthcare, put policy into practice and contribute to public health in Scotland.

The programme covers a wide range of maternal and child health issues including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Births and babies
  • Child health
  • Sexual Health

The programme is also developing and implementing the SBR; a new web-based clinical data collection system. This project will support the development of an electronic health record in Scotland, particularly the elements that relate to maternal and child health.

The programme brings together related areas of work and the team is able to bring a wealth of experience to support service planning and delivery as well as patient care. Recently an anonymous linked dataset was developed that joins together the information of mothers and their babies. This will enable us to gain new insights in the causes and consequences of, for example, pre maturity and low birth weight.

Projects

Care Quality Indicators for Specialist Children's Services

The Women and Children's Health Information Programme established a project team to work in collaboration with the National Steering Group for the National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People in Scotland Download pdf file [440KB] (Scottish Government, 2007) to develop a capacity which would allow services to demonstrate for themselves, and to others, what aspects of quality have improved for children and young people.

The project closed in March 2011 following the successful development of a suite of indicator concepts and engagement with Managed Clinical Networks (MCNs) on how these should be measured.

A copy of the Final Project Report can be downloaded: Care Quality Indicators Final Report Download pdf file [250KB].

National Services Division (NSD) will continue to support networks through the ongoing reporting process which will allow networks to demonstrate improvements against the indicators as part of their quality assurance/performance management process.
