Smoking Cessation

Prescribing of smoking cessation products

Smoking has been identified as the cause of many different health conditions. On the 26th March 2006, a ban on smoking in public places in Scotland was introduced as part of the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Bill to improve public health.

To help smokers stop smoking, the Public Health Service element of the new Community Pharmacy Contract was introduced in Scotland on the 29th August 2008. This involves a program of up to twelve weeks in which people can visit their local pharmacist and be supported in their attempt to stop smoking, which may include prescribing of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or other smoking cessation products. The patient is charged the current prescription charge (£0.00 from 1st April 2011), instead of paying for the products over the counter.

The Public Health Service is not the only method by which patients can be prescribed smoking cessation products. This publication includes all smoking cessation products which were dispensed in the community under the NHS. These products may have been prescribed as part of the Public Health Service or alternate methods, such as from GPs.

The publication summary includes key points from the data tables and some key background information. The publication report includes key points and further commentary on the data, more detailed background information, and meta-data.

It includes data at Scotland and NHS Board level, and includes additional data and charts showing the seasonality of prescribing of smoking cessation products.
