Introduction
Respect and Responsibility: Strategy and Action Plan for Improving Sexual Health highlighted the need to monitor sexual health service development both nationally and at an NHS Board level. A set of key clinical indicators has been developed for this purpose and are managed/reported by DASH. The indicators helped to inform the development of the Healthcare Improvement Scotland (NHS HIS) Sexual Health Clinical Standards and also the National Sexual Health System (NaSH) with its associated datasets, developed by the National Clinical Dataset Development Programme (NCDDP).
The KCIs are reported upon on an annual basis - the date of publication is in brackets.
NHS boards can use these reports to monitor their own progress against previous years and in comparison with others. Those that are performing well are encouraged to share their expertise.
Key Clinical Indicators for Sexual Health - 2011 Reports
All of the Key Clinical Indicator (KCI) reports for sexual health reporting on 2010 data have been published and are available online. The indicators were published as individual reports throughout 2011 and the publication dates for each report are given below.
The long acting reversible contraception KCI was revised on 09 November 2011 following the omission of NHS Lothian data in the original publication. This was a planned revision and further details are given in the report.
Termination of Pregnancy KCI - 08 June 2011
Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) KCI - 26 July 2011/ Revised 09 November 2011
Sterilisation KCI - 27 September 2011
Chlamydia KCI - 27 September 2011
HIV Therapy - 27 September 2011
It is intended that the NHS boards can use data from the KCIs for sexual health as part of the evidence required for the NHS Healthcare Improvement Scotland (formerly QIS) visits as a number of the indicators relate to the NHS QIS standards for sexual health.

Previous Survey Based Indicator Reports
After discussions between ISD and the Clinical Leads for Sexual Health in Scotland, it was decided in 2010 that the mystery shopper report would no longer be conducted by ISD to provide a performance measure for this KCI. Instead, locally available data is preferred by NHS boards which offers a more comprehensive measure than the methodology used in the mystery shopper study. Previous years reports are still available below for reference.
