The change in both collection and presentation of workforce information due to changes to staff groupings under Agenda for Change has inevitably meant that the amount of historical trend analysis of data is limited, though still available for some high level staff groupings.

Future workforce information will more clearly illustrate the distribution of the workforce reflecting modern service delivery. The categorisation of many non medical staff groups is considerably improved from the previous system (based on the Whitley pay structures) allowing better description and analyses of the workforce both now and in the future. However it is recognised that the presentation within these web pages will evolve over time as more detailed information is captured via Scottish Workforce Information Standard System (SWISS).

SWISS is a dynamic system, and as such the workforce information captured is subject to change where the quality of the data is continually improving. As a result the trend information presented in this section should be interpreted with caution. The following documents have been created to aid with interpretation. As part of the 2010 release, the documents detail any shifts in numbers reported within the various staff groups.

Trend data for the medical and dental workforce (excluding medical and dental support) has continued. During 2008, information from the medical and dental (MEDMAN) system which includes information on all medical and dental staff working in hospitals, the community and public sector was migrated to the Scottish Workforce Information Standard System (SWISS).

The figures reported from 2008 onwards are sourced from SWISS and from the Practitioner Contractor Database (PCD) and Management Information and Dental Accounting System (MIDAS). Figures reported prior to 2008 are sourced from MEDMAN, PCD and MIDAS.

For all other staff, trend information has been provided where possible. Please note that the 2007 figures for the total level trend include staff who were previously excluded e.g. chaplains. As a result trend information should be treated with caution.

In January 2008 the Information Services Division (ISD) for the first time, published NHSScotland Workforce information to reflect the introduction of Agenda for Change. In light of this change, and to add clarity, a 'mapping' document was established to describe what trend information is possible. This is presented by the new agenda for change staff groupings as well as being presented in the old Whitley format Download Excel file [75kb].
