Assessment of SMR01 Data 2010/11 - Emerging findings
Background
The SMR01 acute inpatient/day case record is a principal health data scheme collected and processed by ISD for NHS Scotland. SMR01 data held on the national database has many users within NHS Scotland, the Scottish Government and elsewhere. The table below shows the accuracy of Main Condition and Main Operation/Procedure at 3-digit level.

- In the SMR01 Data Quality Assurance Assessment 2004-2006, 5430 records were assessed. Across Scotland Main Condition 3-digit accuracy was 88% and Main Operation 3-digit accuracy was 93%. Emerging figures to date are showing a similar result.
- Above figures show percentage accuracy only and does not take account of sensitivity, completeness or confidence intervals. These will be addressed in the final Scotland Report due for publication in March/April 2012.
- Most SMR01 based analyses tend to use larger groups of three codes. The accuracy figures shown above will generally be considerably higher for these larger groups of codes.
- There may be reasons why scores are not fully comparable across hospitals, for example, due to different mix of specialties.
