Medical Record Linkage
ISD's Record Linkage (RL) team provides a specialist data linkage service to clinical and academic staff and their researchers. Using direct and probability matching techniques, the team link nationally held data to other datasets. As well as providing expert analyses of linked data, the RL team also provides advice on linkages and collaborates with researchers to produce papers on a range of health issues.
Examples of recent linkage projects:
- Joining together data from NHS24 and Scottish Ambulance Service with emergency admissions and deaths data to understand unscheduled care patient pathways.
- Examining the impact of road safety cameras by linking together police accident information to hospital inpatient data.
- Studying the risk of skin cancer after phototherapy for neonatal jaundice.
- Linking maternity data to General Practice information to see whether it's possible to identify postnatal depression.

The Record Linkage team is part of the Scottish Health Information Service at ISD, working closely with the Scottish Health Information Service for Research (SHIS-R).
