Scottish Health Information Service
Enabling local analysis of national data
The Scottish Health Information Service (SHIS) enables Health Boards to carry out analyses locally on ISD-held data marts. Using the NHSScotland Corporate Data Warehouse, built using common dimensions, authorised SHIS users access data securely to create and run reports on a range of data marts through Business Objects XI (BOXI). SHIS also supports the development of approaches to data sharing across NHS Boards to facilitate cross site comparison and identification of good practice.
Comparative information on healthcare services for NHSScotland
Another major component of SHIS is Navigator - a web-based information service designed to meet the needs of key healthcare staff in NHS Boards, Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) and hospitals. Navigator provides user-friendly access to a broad range of comparative information to aid the review, monitoring and planning of services and support quality improvement.
Provision and governance of data for research
Closely linked to the development of SHIS is the Scottish Health Information Service for Research (SHIS-R). SHIS-R supports the provision of datasets for research and the governance of that within the Scottish Health Informatics Programme (SHIP). Working closely with SHIS-R are the Medical Record Linkage (MRL) team who provide a specialist linkage service to clinical and academic staff and their researchers using direct and probability matching techniques to link nationally held health data to other datasets.
