SHIS Data Marts

Data marts available through SHIS

SHIS will be supporting the development and release of a range of data marts as part of its remit to enable secure online access to nationally held data. The first data mart to be released through SHIS is the ACaDMe data mart which was piloted in NHS Ayrshire & Arran and NHS Lothian during 2009 ahead of a planned national roll out in 2010.

ACaDMe Data Mart

ACaDMe stands for Acute Cancer Deaths and Mental Health. The ACaDMe data mart contains the linked inpatient and daycase (SMR01), mental health (SMR04), cancer registration (SMR06) and deaths records from General Registers of Scotland (GROS). ACaDMe contains data from 1981 to present day and is updated on a monthly basis. More detailed information on ACaDMe is available through the ACaDMe section of the ISD website.

ACaDMe National Comparative

A 'view' of the ACaDMe data mart which allows authorised NHS Board users to compare results against other Boards data. More detailed information on ACaDMe is available through the ACaDMe section of the ISD website.

Accident and Emergency (A&E) Data Mart

The Accident and Emergency (A&E) data mart was launched in January 2011. It contains data from June 2007 to the present day on patient attendances at Emergency Departments, Minor Injuries Units and community hospital A&E?s across NHS Scotland. The A&E data mart gives authorised users access to data including demographic information, attendances, waiting times and patient flow for their residents and their residents treated elsewhere in NHSScotland. The data mart hold two levels of information, episodic patient level (only available for A&E departments with the IT capacity to submit patient level data to ISD) and aggregate monthly data (this contains total attendances and compliance with the four hour wait standard). The A&E data mart allows users to create bespoke reports as well as run the standard reports created by ISD?s Unscheduled Care Team. To find out more about accessing the A&E data mart or to discuss training requirements please telephone the SHIS helpline on 0131 275 7050 or e-mail the team at nss.isdaeshis@nhs.net. [Added 17 January 2011]

Completeness Data Mart

The Completeness Data Mart was launched at the end of December 2010. The data mart contains a series of standard reports on data completeness from 1 January 1981 to present day for:

  • Outpatients (SMR00)
  • Acute/general discharges (SMR01)
  • Maternity discharges (SMR02)
  • Mental health discharges (SMR04)
  • Cancer registrations (Socrates)
  • Death registrations (GRO)

All ACaDMe and Outpatients (SMR00) data mart users will have automatic access to the new data mart. Anyone who requires access to the completeness data mart only should contact ISD's Data Monitoring Team by e-mail at nss.isdDMT@nhs.net.

The Completeness Data Mart User Manual along with other supporting information on data quality can be accessed through the Managing Data Quality pages of the ISD website. [Added 10 January 2011].

Hospitals Medicine Utilisation Database

The Hospital Medicines Utilisation Database (HMUD) provides access to staff in NHS Boards and other interested parties to high level information to support the assessment and monitoring of cost and clinical effectiveness of medicines used in hospital. More detailed information is available on the HMUD webpages.

Outpatients (SMR00) Data Mart

The Outpatients (SMR00) data mart contains information from 1 January 1997 to present day for outpatient appointments in NHSScotland. The data within it is updated on a monthly basis. More detailed information on the Outpatients (SMR00) data mart is available through the Outpatients (SMR00) section of the ISD website.
