Navigator
What is Navigator?
Navigator is a web-based information tool designed to meet the needs of key healthcare staff in NHS Boards, Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) and hospitals. A key component of the Scottish Health Information Service (SHIS), Navigator provides user-friendly access to a broad range of comparative information to help review, monitor and plan healthcare services and support quality improvement.
What information is available?
Navigator presents and compares a range of information at NHS Board level. The user can 'drill down' to review the more detailed information that underpins each indicator (at CHP and GP practice or hospital, specialty and consultant level as appropriate). In addition, users are able to compare themselves to their peers (CHP or hospital as appropriate).
Navigator includes the following indicators:
Primary Care Indicators:
- Prevalence (Quality & Outcomes Framework (QOF))
- Prescribing: Items Dispensed
- Generic Prescribing
- Emergency Department
- Outpatients
- Potentially Preventable Admissions (PPA)
- Admissions
- Readmissions
- Scottish Patients at Risk of Readmission & Admission (SPARRA)
- GP Practice Summary
Hospital Indicators:
- Emergency Department
- Day Case Rates
- Length of Stay: Episodes
- Length of Stay: Spells
- Readmissions
- Consultant Activity
- Consultant Summary
Future Developments
Navigator is regularly developed to enhance existing indicators and add new ones. In the latest development, two new indicators providing information on Emergency Department attendances were released at the end of March 2012.
Where does the information come from?
Navigator obtains data on a quarterly basis from national health and care data collected and held by ISD Scotland.
Accessing Navigator
Navigator is only available via NHSnet. Security of the information within Navigator is paramount therefore user access is strictly controlled and authorised locally by the NHS Board Caldicott Guardian. Once authorisation is given, users access Navigator using Business Objects XI (BOXI). Users can obtain predefined reports and download these for further local analysis.
