SNOMED CT Resources

NB Suppliers and developers wishing to download the latest SNOMED CT files for implementation should register with the TRUD download site where they will be asked to agree to the SNOMED CT Licence Terms and Conditions before downloading. Suppliers should note that SNOMED CT comes in two formats - the original RF1 which is being phased out and RF2. See online learning and webinars section for further support on release file formats. Downloadable Webinars - obtain from NHS Digital Delen SNOMED CT Education and Training webpage (mostly around an hour each in duration):

  • An introduction to SNOMED CT. The first in this series of webinars is an introduction to SNOMED CT. This webinar looks at why a single terminology, what a terminology is, some of the features of SNOMED CT and gives some examples of where SNOMED CT is currently used and its benefits.
  • Using and Implementing SNOMED CT. The Second in this webinar series is primarily aimed at informatics staff and suppliers, and takes individuals through the details of the files and products associated with SNOMED CT.
  • An introduction to NHS dm+d and SNOMED CT UK Drug Extension.
  • An Introduction to the release files in Release Format 2 (Technical). This presentation is aimed at developers and technical implementers. It assumes a basic understanding of SNOMED CT. This webinar gives an overview of the different SNOMED CT UK extensions, walks you through the release files and the different release packs, looks at the content of the Release Format 2 files and highlight aspects of the file specifications, finally it illustrates how you might process these with some SQL scripts.
  • Finding Content in SNOMED CT. This webinar takes you through the techniques for successfully searching SNOMED CT for the clinical terms you require. It goes through searching for individual terms, groups of related terms and terms related to a specific speciality as well as simple tips for making your searches successful.

  • SNOMED CT Beginners eLearning. This course is aimed at anyone who will be using applications incorporating SNOMED CT and is designed to provide them with a good basic understanding. Self directed but takes approximately 40-60 minutes to complete

Forums and events

NHS Digital Implementation Forum - The NHS Digital runs a forum every two months, focused on implementation topics, usually delivered using desktop sharing and audio conference facilities. This enables those involved with implementation to be kept up to date with any terminology developments or raise any questions or issues.

NHS Networks also hosts a SNOMED CT community with a discussion board where ideas can be shared and questions raised.

SNOMED International Confluence site - a collaborative work space for IHTSDO SNOMED CT projects.

SNOMED International Expo - each year SNOMED International provides a showcase event hosted in one of its member countries. The 2016 event will take place in Wellington New Zealand in October 27/28th. The 2017 event will be held in Bratislava in 19/20th October.

SNOMED CT awareness training in Scotland. NSS NHS Scotland Terminology Services may be able to provide some basic awareness sessions in SNOMED CT for NHS Scotland staff. Contact the Terminology Services helpdesk to request training ( 0131-275-7283 Tues-Thurs 9-5 ).

Requesting new SNOMED CT Terms in Scotland. NSS NHS Scotland Terminology Services can liaise on your behalf with NHS Digital to facilitate new term requests for inclusion in the SNOMED CT UK extension.
