Data for Research

Data Options

A wide range of administrative data can be linked and made available for analysis through eDRIS, assuming data controller agreement. Information on Scottish health and other useful administrative datasets for research can be found at ISD's National Data Catalogue and at the Administrative Data Liaison Service website (ADLS) - please note this website is longer updated.

NHS Health Data held by ISD

Scotland has some of the best health service data in the world. Few other countries have information which combines high quality data, consistency, national coverage and the ability to link data to enable research.

ISD hold NHS health and health related data for over 5 million people in Scotland, which in some cases span an individual's whole life: from before birth, with the mother’s antenatal records, through to the individual's death registration record. This is a wealth of information which can be linked, summarised and analysed to support research studies.

Most of these datasets are analysed / summarised individually and presented for information on the ISD website and can be found under health topics or through the A to Z index. As a starter this will give you a flavour of the information available and the types of analyses that can be carried out on this data. We also hold births and deaths data provided to us by NRS. Please visit the NRS website for further information on their data.

ISD has also provided information on the main health datasets available for research to ADLS to publish on their website. In addition ISD has an online data dictionary that provides descriptions of individual variables, recording rules and any applicable coding values for the SMR (Scottish Morbidity Record) datasets, SBR (Scottish Birth Record) and A&E (Accident & Emergency) data.
