National Census of Allied Health Professionals

Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) - National Dataset

ISD is working with the Scottish Executive Health Department (SEHD) on various information projects with the aim of finalising a national AHP dataset that will improve the data available nationally on the work of AHPs.  This project will take account of existing developments and pilots in various areas.

Census of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs)
In September 2005 the Scottish Executive Health Department commissioned a first Scotland-wide census of the caseload of NHSScotland AHPs.  This was undertaken in order to:

  • improve information available nationally on AHP caseload, and to contribute to the development of core data standards for the work of AHPs
  • ascertain the magnitude, variety and diversity of AHPs' caseload.

The report Preliminary results from the census was published on 26th January 2006 and presents initial findings. 

The second report from the AHP census, Waiting for AHP services. A review of the numbers waiting and possible waiting times for an appointment with an AHP was published on 6th July 2006.

The work is supported by the Electronic Community Health Information Project for Allied Health Professionals in Scotland (AHP eCHIP) link opens in a new window  whose focus is on the summary caseload information that should be available electronically with standardised definitions throughout NHS Scotland.
