Annual reports on perinatal mortality in Scotland were produced between 1977 and 2012. Information on late fetal deaths (deaths at 20 to 23 weeks gestation) was collected by the survey from 1991. The last report in 2012 included information on late fetal deaths, late neonatal and post-neonatal infant deaths. In later years, information on certain congenital anomalies occurring in live births, stillbirths, miscarriages and terminations had also been included. In 2011, a more detailed data collection form was used and a new system for classifying the cause of death was introduced. The quality and completeness of information improved and causes of death reflected modern practice and knowledge.

The Scottish Stillbirth and Infant Death Survey and the production of the report, including quality assurance, were managed jointly by the Reproductive Health Programme of Healthcare Improvement Scotland and the Information Services Division of NHS National Services Scotland with collaboration from National Records of Scotland.

MBRRACE-UK reports - reporting 2013 onwards

The 2012 SPIMMR was the last to be produced by ISD. In January 2013, the Scottish Stillbirth and Infant Death Survey was replaced by a revised UK survey, MBRRACE-UK (Mothers and Babies Reducing Risk through Audit and Confidential Enquiries across the UK). This new collaboration was appointed by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) for the national programme of work investigating maternal deaths, stillbirths and infant deaths. Funding is provided by the four UK departments of health.

All units in Scotland are now registered for the web based data collection process. It is planned that Scottish data will be separately analysed in addition to the UK report and will be used to inform the patient safety programme in maternity services.

The MBRRACE-UK annual reports on perinatal mortality (deaths from 2013 onwards) can be found on the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit website.
