Clinical Audit
Scottish Trauma Audit Group

The Scottish Trauma Audit Group (STAG) was established in 1991 to audit the management of seriously injured patients in Scotland. All patients over the age of 13 years who were admitted to hospital for at least three days, or died, as a result of trauma, (except patients aged over 65 years with an isolated hip fracture), were included in the audit. The audit was stopped in 2003.

The objectives of the audit were:
  • To improve the management of seriously injured patients in Scotland
  • To establish a high quality national database of seriously injured patient
  • To maximise the use of the data through associated research projects and publications
The audit collected information relating to patient demography, the nature and severity of their injury, their clinical management, and their outcome. The information collected was used both to feed back results to participating hospitals on a regular basis, and also for a number of specific research projects.

Comparative information showing the actual numbers of patients surviving, compared to the number that would be expected to survive based on factors such as the severity of the patients? injuries, by hospital was produced by STAG. STAG provided a range of reports to Units, Trusts, Health Boards, and associated research projects, and also responded to ad hoc requests for analysis.
