Quality Improvement

Surgical Profiles

This is a project to design and construct, in partnership with managers and clinicians, an evidence based report on the quality of surgical services provided by an NHS Board. The proposal is to construct the Surgical Profile Report (SGR) using mainly national data sources which are of two types: SMR based routine data collection principally from NHS administrative systems (e.g. from PAS systems); and national clinical audit systems led by clinicians.

 This initiative will help enable individual NHS Scotland Boards to:

  1. improve their implementation of clinical governance / quality improvement policies by providing comparative information on outcomes, processes etc that will give pointers to strengths and weaknesses;

  2. encourage bottom-up (clinician specific) evidence to be used together with the SPR top-down view of Board / hospital / specialty level surgical services to improve quality of care;

  3. will establish a surgical governance / quality improvement reporting and assessment framework for surgical specialties that the acute medical services and primary / community services can aspire to;

  4. will act as an incentive for the development of evidence to support the clinical team as a whole, not just the consultant.
