Managing Data Quality
SMR Completeness
In order to make sensible use of the national SMR databases for areas such as clinical governance, performance management and outcome measurement it is necessary to take a view on the completeness of each database at regular intervals. Strictly speaking, only individual NHS providers will know exactly how complete their SMR submissions are, and the extent of any backlog. However, it is possible to provide an indicator of completeness by making use of recent historical SMR submissions and outstanding submission reports from NHS Providers. SMR data is expected to be received by ISD up to 6 weeks following the end of the month of discharge/clinic.
SMR Completeness Estimates (SMREstimates.xls ) (243KB)
SMR Completeness Estimates show the percentage of SMR completeness for all NHS Boards by location, for the last four quarters expected to be complete and for each calendar/financial year. The tables and supporting charts are calculated by comparing SMR backlogs and submissions to expected annual totals. These estimates are supported by information provided by NHS Boards.
SMR vs SMR Comparison Charts
SMR vs SMR Comparison Charts show the number of SMRs on each national database over the most recent 24 months (by way of a month-by-month comparison between the latest 12 month period, and the previous 12 months). These charts are used at the 6 monthly meetings between ISD and NHS providers.
Please Note: The data presented in the SMR vs SMR Comparison charts may contain information which enables (perhaps with the aid of further knowledge of the topic) an individual patient to be identified. To ensure patient confidentiality is not compromised the SMR completeness charts have been removed from this page. To request a copy of these charts please email NSS.ISDDMT@nhs.net
