Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Stroke Programme

The aim of the CHD and Stroke Programme is to produce better information to support clinical care, audit and planning for future service provision.

Objectives 2008/09

  • Agree plan for implementation of CHD data repository including linked data and, initially, Scottish Care Information - Acute Coronary Syndrome data (SCI-ACS)
  • Work with Data and IT sub-groups at Golden Jubilee National Hospital towards the deliver of an e-Cardiology system
  • Diversify into new areas - e.g. paediatric cardiac services, and community services for heart failure and stroke

Programme Summary

CHD and stroke mortality is the second most common cause of death in Scotland. Better information supports both clinical care, audit and better planning for future service provision. The programme helps to achieve the Scottish Government target to cut CHD mortality by 60% and stroke mortality by 50% for the under 75s from 1995 to 2010.

The two key areas of developing national CHD and Stroke are:

  • Developing common data standards so we can share information across the NHS
  • Implementing IT systems which use these standards to support clinicians in their day to day work
