GRO Registrations vs SMR02 Births
Since 1855 all births in Scotland have been registered with the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS). The chart below shows an initial rise to around 120,000 births per year in the early 1900s then a general downward trend to just over 50,000 in 2002. Since then there has been a steady year on year increase with 57,781 live births registered in 2007. There is a slight dip in the SMR02 figures for 2007 due to SMR02 data still being provisional. The 2007 GROS figures show that the number of live births increased by 3.8% from 2006 and is the highest number registered since 1997.
Data for all births registered in Scotland are available on the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) vital events webpages: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk
