Dental
Vocational Trainees
To be eligible to hold an NHS list number and become a principal in the NHS General Dental Service, new or recent graduates from UK dental schools must complete one year's programme of vocational training. The purpose of this is to help dental graduates make the transition to unsupervised practice in the NHS General Dental Service. New graduates on the training programmes are known as Vocational Trainees (VTs).
The vocational training year begins in August and usually consists of twelve months supervised clinical experience in an approved practice, supplemented by an educational programme. In addition to this one year training scheme there is a two-year General Professional Training programme comprising one year of vocational training in general practice and a further year divided between the Hospital Dental Service and the Community Dental Service.
There are currently 120 VT places in Scotland, which are managed through regional centres in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

in the count for the year of intake corresponding to their first year of training.
