ISD Programmes

Cancer Information Programme

The aim of the Cancer Development Programme is to provide a high quality, responsive information service in support of all aspects of cancer control.

Objectives 2008/09

  • Extend the Cancer Registry database to include further chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment data
  • Provide an online system, based on the Quality Aware Database System (QUADS) that will
    1. Process national cancer audit data
    2. Enable sampling of data for Quality Assurance, and
    3. Support remote data entry, analysis, and reporting

Programme Summary

The programme was developed to maintain the collection, analysis and dissemination of high quality data on cancer in the population of Scotland. It also supports the development of nationwide perspective audit of cancer services in Scotland, working towards the integration of cancer registration and audit as far as possible.

The programme is in place to support:

  • The regional cancer networks and Scottish Government Health Department in developing waiting times reporting
  • Research into the causes of and treatment of cancer, in particular assisting the Scottish Cancer Research Network and participating as an effective partner in the CaCTUS
  • Clinical genetics services by undertaking pedigree research and verification of family histories as requested

And to provide:

  • A public health surveillance function in collaboration with the ISD Public Health Programme and the Scottish Health Protection Organisation
  • Information to support the planning of services for all aspects of cancer
  • Information to support the monitoring and evaluation of prevention, screening and treatment services for cancer
  • A responsive information service to stakeholders and customers
