Fireworks Injuries

News

29th March 2007
Publication of results from the annual fireworks injuries survey in Scotland ordinarily takes place in March of each year, reporting figures for injuries occurring during the previous October / November survey period.  Due to resource issues, the UK-wide 2006 DTI survey did not take place.  Consequently, these pages have not been updated to include 2006 figures for Scotland.

Background

These web pages contain results of the annual fireworks injuries survey in Scotland, carried out under the banner of the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) Fireworks Injuries Enquiry for Great Britain.  Fireworks homepage

The DTI survey covers England, Scotland and Wales, collecting information on the incidence of fireworks related injuries, the nature of these injuries, their geographic and demographic distribution and the circumstances under which the injuries occur.  This information goes on to inform policy for regulation of fireworks sales and assists local planning for fireworks related issues.

The data presented here consist of all injuries caused by fireworks that require treatment in Accident & Emergency Departments and Burns / Plastic Surgery Units in Scotland during a period spanning mid October to mid November when sales of fireworks are traditionally at their height in the United Kingdom.

The latest survey (the 27th) was performed during the period 11th October to 12th November 2005 inclusive.

Please note: This survey solely concerns injuries due to the discharge of fireworks. Injuries due to bonfires alone are not included.

In addition to the latest information (presented in spreadsheets as tables and charts), these web pages include previously published data to provide convenient access to information on historic trends.

Results of the most recent survey (and links to historic publications) may be accessed via the Fireworks Survey 2005 link to the left of this web page.
