Life & Health Expectancy in Baby Boomers
David Clark, ISD
This presentation places the post-war "baby-boomer" generation in context demographically by looking at trends in live births and changing population age-structures. Life and Healthy Life Expectancy for this cohort of people is examined by looking at national trends and comparing the experience of Edinburgh residents with the most affluent and most deprived council areas in Scotland. A snapshot of the current morbidity and mortality of Edinburgh baby boomers, in terms of hospital activity and causes of death, are then contrasted with similar age groups 10 and 20 years ago. Finally, by looking at lifestyle risk factor indicators from the 1995, 1998 & 2003 Scottish Health Surveys, we can see what the baby-boomers are doing for themselves to make possible a long and healthy future.
