Inpatient, Day Case and Outpatient Activity

Summary Statistics

Nationally available information shows that in Scotland there are over half a million planned admissions to hospital per year (around 0.6 million in 2006/07).

Planned admissions (also known as elective admissions) include day case appointments and inpatient admissions.  Trends show that overall there has been a general increase in the number of admissions.  However day cases have shown a marked rise until around 1998/99 when numbers have since remained relatively constant.  This may be explained by the general shift towards performing more major procedures in outpatient clinics.

Not all admissions to hospital are planned and there has been a steady rise in the number of emergency admissions over the past two decades - rising from 317,345 in 1985/86 to 499,773 in 2006/07.  Analysis is available within the multiple admissions pages of this web site which aims to offer a better understanding of the underlying trends in emergency admissions, and in particular multiple emergency admissions.

Information available within these pages provides data on the number of planned, emergency and transfer admissions by specialty and NHS Board of Treatment/Residence.   The analysis presents the number of episodes, continuous stays in hospital (CIS) and patients.

These pages now include quarterly inpatient/day case activity for quarters June 2007, September 2007, December 2007, March 2008 and June 2008.
