About Our Data

Since the start of the National Health Service (NHS), staff who provide care or treatment have collected data about the individual in order to provide better care.

Here in Scotland, some of these data are brought together and stored in what is known as the national database. This national database is managed by ISD Scotland on behalf of NHSScotland.

ISD Scotland works in partnership with a wide range of organisations - NHSScotland Unified Boards, hospitals, general practioners, local authorities, voluntary organisations, Community Health Partnerships and many other care and service providers to build the national database, using national datasets to support the collection and management of information.

An important subdivision of the statistics collected by ISD Scotland are National Statistics. National Statistics is a stringent quality marker applied to certain of the UK's official statistics.

Information is collected in the following national data schemes:

Patient and Activity Data
Patient data is collected at an individual level and includes the Scottish Morbidity Record (SMR) schemes. Also included is needs and dependency data which is collected on care of the elderly (SHRUGs/SCRUGs). Activity data is collected at an aggregate level.

Workforce and Earnings Data
NHSScotland is Scotland's largest employer with over 136 000 directly or indirectly employed staff. Data is collected at both an individal and aggregate level.

NHSScotland Complaints Data
There are two complaints data schemes in operation, Hospital & Community Health Services Complaints and Primary Care Health Services Complaints.
