An annual update on Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Cerebrovascular Disease.

(Note: Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) includes subarachnoid haemorrhage, stroke (non-traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral infarction) and transient ischaemic attack (TIA). The term 'stroke' is often used to cover all CVD).

This release updates data on mortality, incidence, operations, prescribing, hospital activity, waiting times, and deprivation. Data on mortality include 2005 figures and hospital activity includes data to March 31 2006. This release includes new data on the prevalence of CHD. It can be found on the ISD Scotland website at:

Summary:
  • Mortality rates for both CHD and Stroke continue to fall and are on course to meet the targets for 2010. Incidence of both CHD and Stroke continued to fall.
  • The number of revascularisations procedures (coronary bypasses and angioplasties) operations carried out by the NHS in Scotland continues to rise.
  • The number of prescriptions dispensed for cardiovascular (CHD and Stroke) related drugs continues to rise although the overall cost fell from 2004 to 2005.

This release includes:
  1. incidence and mortality data for 2005 and trends since 1996
  2. an annual update of figures on the number of heart disease operations and rates up to March 2006
  3. an update on median waiting times for CHD related procedures- as data include ASC cases these data cannot be used to monitor adherence to waiting time standards
  4. an annual update on GP prescribing, by Health Board and trends from 1996-2005
  5. an annual update on hospital discharges from 1996-97 to 2005-06.
  6. a new section on CHD prevalence based on hospital discharge data. Data is presented by Health Board area and Community Health Partnership.

Key Points Include:

CHD

  • The long term decline in death rates from Coronary Heart Disease in Scotland has continued in 2005 with an overall fall in the death rate (standardised for age) by 5.2 per cent since 2004 (from 139.4 to 132.1 per 100,000 population).
  • The under 75 death rate (standardised by age) from CHD fell by 4.0% (from 70.3 to 67.5 per 100,000) and is on track to meet the target of a 60% reduction from 1995 to 2010.
  • The incidence rate (number of people diagnosed with Coronary Heart Disease per 100,000 population standardised by age) decreased by 4 per cent for 2005 compared with 2004 (from 316.7 to 304.0).
  • The number of revascularisation procedures (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts and Coronary Angioplasties) performed by NHSScotland has risen from 7,369 in 2004/05 to 8,120 in 2005/06, an increase of 10.2%. This continues an upward trend in the number of these procedures carried out in Scotland. The number of Coronary Angiography investigations was 17,065 in 2005/06, compared to 15,800 in 2004/05 (an increase of 8.0%).
  • The number of prescriptions dispensed for cardiovascular (CHD and Stroke) related drugs continues to rise although the overall cost fell from 2004 to 2005.

Cerebrovascular disease
  • The long term decline in death rates from Cerebrovascular Disease in Scotland has continued in 2005 with an overall fall in the death rate (standardised for age) by 8.4 per cent since 2004 (from 74.2 to 68.0 per 100,000 population).
  • The under 75 death rate (standardised by age) from CVD fell by 8.4% (from 22.5 to 20.6 per 100,000) and is on track to meet the target of a 50% reduction from 1995 to 2010.
  • Incidence of CVD fell from 211.8 per 100,000 (age standardised) in 1996 to 170.7 in 2005.
