Mental Health of Children and Young People in Scotland:
Characteristics of the Specialist CAMHS Workforce in 2005

(Not National Statistics)

Data describing the characteristics of the workforce of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in NHS Scotland as at 31st May 2005.  Published at:  www.isdscotland.org/wf_camhs

Summary:

The Scottish Needs Assessment Programme (SNAP) Report on Child and Adolescent Mental Health highlighted the importance of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and the need for development of these services within Scotland.  In October 2005, the Scottish Executive published The Mental Health of Children and Young People: A Framework for Promotion, Prevention and Care which set the policy direction and a commitment to developing these services.

There was previously no current reliable information about how many people work within NHS Scotland CAMHS.  This information gap meant that it was difficult to map services, service development and to provide accurate and up to date information about what the SNAP survey indicated was significant inequity of service provision.  Thus, in order to provide up to date intelligence about the specialist CAMHS workforce in NHS Scotland, ISD and headsupScotland have developed a data collection system to capture this information.    This data collection was undertaken for the first time in 2005, and this report represents the first output from this data mapping exercise.  The data presented describe the characteristics of NHS Scotland CAMHS services as at 31st May 2005.
