Nurse-led Outpatient Activity Project

Since the recording of procedures on SMR00 by outpatient nurse-led clinics was made mandatory in April 2003, the data that ISD has been receiving from the service has been patchy and does not reflect the magnitude of work carried out by nurses in outpatient nurse-led clinics.

In recent years, there has been a greater emphasis given towards enhancing the role of nurses.  The CCI is successfully using this opportunity to redesign outpatient services, thereby addressing waiting times and improving the quality of service for patients by providing rapid consultation, diagnosis and treatment in a number of clinical areas. However, most of the activity are either unrecorded or recorded inappropriately.

The project - Outpatient nurse-led activity in collaboration with Centre for Change & Innovation was undertaken to understand the activities that are carried out in a selection of nurse-led outpatient services in providing care for the patient during their journey. The main objectives of this project were to:

  • Identify a selection of nurse-led outpatient services that are being redesigned to improve patient access and reduce waiting times.
  • Engage with the selected services by site visits and relationship building.
  • Prepare a Project Initiation Document.
  • Outline and analyse the processes and activities in the nurse-led services by means of research methodology.
  • Present a final report highlighting unrecorded information and options for development of national information.
