Notifiable Infectious Disease Statistics
Latest update of data on confirmed infectious disease notifications for Scotland.
ISD Scotland's Notifiable Infectious Disease statistics annual update now includes confirmed notifications to the year ended 31st December 2005 and a summary of provisional notifications data for the first 26 weeks of 2006.
Data on notifiable infectious diseases are returned to ISD Scotland by NHS Boards under the terms of statutory public health legislation which covers diseases such as mumps, measles, rubella, tuberculosis and food poisoning.
This release includes total confirmed notifications of infectious diseases commonly affecting children and other selected significant diseases, annual trends, geographic variation and age/sex distributions.
Key points from the 2005 update include:

The number of mumps notifications rose substantially during 2005 continuing the trend of the 2004 outbreak.
- Notifications of mumps in children (under 15 year olds) increased from 442 cases in 2004
to 679 cases in 2005.
- Across all ages, mumps notifications increased from 3,595 in 2004 to 5,698 in 2005.
The 15-24 year old age group contributed the majority of cases (69%), typical of
previous years.
- Provisional weekly returns report a total of 1,713 notifications for the first six months of
2006 suggesting the incidence of new cases may be decreasing. -
Childhood measles notifications decreased from 231 in 2004 to 162 in 2005.

Notifications of rubella in under 15 year olds decreased from 204 cases in 2004 to 126 cases in 2005.

Chicken pox notifications for children fell markedly from 18,489 in 2004 to 13,874 in 2005, a decrease of approximately 25%.

389 notifications of tuberculosis (Tb) were made in 2005, 74 fewer than in 2004.

6918 food poisoning notifications were made in 2005, an increase of 114 above 2004 figures.

Infectious disease: A clinically manifest disease of humans or animals arising through transmission of an infectious agent (synonym: communicable disease).
Notifiable Infectious Disease: One of a range of infectious diseases that are required to be notified in writing upon each diagnosis by a general practitioner under the terms of The Public Health (Notification of Infectious Diseases) (Scotland) Regulations 1988.
