Unintentional Injuries
Summary
This release updates data on:
- emergency hospital admissions as a result of an unintentional injury up to financial year ending 31 March 2006
- deaths caused by unintentional injury up to year ending 31 December 2005.
New information on emergency hospital admissions and deaths as a result of an unintentional injury in the home is presented by age and sex and deprivation quintile.
The interactive information contains downloadable files that enable the user to manipulate the data by selecting the sex and age groups. For the first time, these tables allow the user to select injuries caused in the home and other settings.
Children
- In financial year 2005/06 approximately 1 in 6 emergency hospital admissions is a result of an unintentional injury.
- In all age groups, males are more likely than females to be admitted to a hospital owing to an unintentional injury (males=6,202; females=3,626).
- In both sexes, falls is the most common cause of emergency admission for injury to hospital.
- Home injuries account for approximately one third of emergency admissions that are a direct result of an unintentional injury. Children in the 1-4 age group account for over 50% of these admissions.
- In calendar year 2005 approximately 1 in 21 childhood deaths were as a result of an unintentional injury. This figure has decreased from 1 in 14 childhood deaths in calendar year 2004.
- Road traffic accidents are the most common cause of death.
Adults
- In financial year 2005/06 approximately 1 in 9 emergency hospital admissions is a result of an unintentional injury.
- In all age groups, males aged 15-64 are more likely than females to be admitted to a hospital owing to an unintentional injury. However, this pattern changes for ages 65 and over where females are more likely to be admitted.
- In both sexes, falls is the most common cause of emergency admission for injury to hospital.
- Unintentional injuries in the home account for over a quarter of all emergency admissions to hospital as a result of an unintentional injury for adults aged 15 and over. The 75 and over age group account for over 50% of these admissions.
- In calendar year 2005 approximately 1 in 43 deaths were as a result of an unintentional injury. This figure has decreased from 1 in 40 adult deaths in calendar year 2004.
- Falls is the most common cause of death for adults.

Glossary:
The term "unintentional injury" is preferred to "accidents" as the latter implies events are inevitable and unavoidable whereas a high proportion of these incidents are now regarded as being preventable.
