Please note, following the Ministerial Statement on 19 September 2007, the guidance relating to 'Could Not Attend' has been changed. A patient may now be referred back to the care of their GP, if appropriate, if seeking to rearrange a third or subsequent appointment or admission date.  Previously, a hospital could choose to refer a patient back if they sought to rearrange an appointment or admission date for a second time.  All guidance relating to 'Could Not Attend' or 'CNA' on this website is currently being updated to reflect this change.

Beardmore - New Ways National Events
The Beardmore event planned for Wednesday 19 March 2008 (A.M) has been postponed. The event is being postponed to allow the many staff who are currently heavily involved in meeting the 21 March 2008 timetable for new ways extraction, validation and data cleansing issues, more time for this. A new date is being arranged and will be circulated in due course. Apologies for any inconvenience this causes.

Previous New Ways events were held on 29 August 2007 and 7 February 2007.

Policies and Procedures
It is recognised that updating local policies and procedures to incorporate New Ways is useful as a means of embedding good practice. Carol Golding of NHS Ayrshire and Arran has very kindly offered to share their local policy and procedure documents with NHS colleagues and these can be accessed on the NHS Ayrshire and Arran policies and procedures page.

Recording Manual
The Waiting Times Recording Manual guidance defines each of the data items which form the waiting times 'dataset' from 1 January 2008 onwards. This manual should be used in conjunction with the 'Applying the Scottish Health Department Guidance' (see above).

Scenarios
The New Ways scenarios document contains ten scenarios which together cover the eight broad categories of New Ways patient journeys (i.e. combinations of DNA/CNA, unavailability, multiple offers).  Although these 10 scenarios won't cover every possible type of New Ways journey, they are in combination expected to encompass the vast majority of episodes (i.e. the 'no DNA/CNA, no unavailability, no multiple offer' scenario itself is expected to cover the majority of episodes). These scenarios are provided for Boards/system users to use on local systems, if they wish,  there is no national requirement to undertake this testing.  However, for those boards who do wish to test these scenarios then local results can be compared with results produced from the national warehouse (i.e. calculation of wait). It should be noted that this scenario testing is not intended to assist Board colleagues in assessing local interpretation and recording of New Ways scenarios, rather to help assess whether local systems / extracts produce the 'expected' data from these scenarios.

Test Scripts
Test scripts are used to evaluate newly changed PAS systems e.g. what elements should be present/capable of being recorded; what functionality should be present; clinical scenarios to be tested.
