Fees
Child fees paid to dentists by local NHS boards are composed of item of service and capitation fees. During 2007/08, the fees paid by NHS boards to dentists for the provision of child treatment were made up of approximately 44% for items of service and 56% for capitation.
The cost to the GDS of treating a child during 2007/08 (i.e. total of item of service and registration costs, divided by the child population of Scotland) increased from £51 to £54, while the total spend on child dental care for the year ending March 2008 was £57,036,513.
Under NHS General Dental Service regulations, children are defined as those aged 17 and under.
Adult fees paid to dentists by local NHS boards are composed of item of service and continuing care fees. During 2007/08, the fees paid by NHS boards to dentists for the provision of adult treatment were made up of approximately 84% for items of service and 16% for registration of patients in continuing care.
The cost to the GDS of treating an adult during 2007/08 (i.e. total of item of service and registration costs, divided by the adult population of Scotland) increased from £33 to £35, while the total spend on adult dental care for the year ending March 2008 was £144,032,038.
