Quarterly update of dispensing contractors remuneration

SUMMARY OF RELEASE:

These schedules are aimed at those with an understanding of payments made to dispensing contractors.  The tables are intended to be used as reference listings detailing payments made to Scottish dispensing contractors of pharmaceuticals, up to December 2006.

The main points are the number of prescription items dispensed and the cost fo these items together with the fees paid to the dispensers.  The payments include the total gross ingredient cost (GIC); the net ingredient cost (NIC); the cost of individual fees and allowances; the gross total and patient charges.

The tables are intended to be used primarily as reference tables but may also be used to compare trends of payments from month to month.

Dispensing contractors, i.e. community pharmacists, dispensing doctors, and appliance suppliers, are contracted by NHS Scotland to provide a service to the populous of Scotland.  To ensure drugs are available for dispensing when a patient arrives with a prescription, dispensing contractors purchase drugs in advance.

Therefore, dispensing contractors receive two distinct types of payment:

  • remuneration for the service they provide; and
  • reimbursement for the drugs they dispense.

These tables show the remuneration costs and reimbursement amounts for calendar year 2006 and financial year 2006/07 (to December 06).

  • The data are derived from information gathered by Practitioner Services Division (PSD), after the pricing of prescriptions has taken place.  Payments to dispensing contractors are made by PSD on behalf of the NHS boards.  Monthly schedules are made available on a quarterly basis and a year-end summary is provided.
  • Each sheet contains the overall Scotland total payments made to dispensing contractors, split between three defined groupings: community pharmacies, appliance suppliers, and dispensing doctors.
