Child Health Surveillance - Scottish Immunisation Recall System (SIRS)

The aim of the Scottish Immunisation Recall System (SIRS) is to ensure that children receive the appropriate immunisation according to the childhood immunisation schedule.  SIRS calls children when a scheduled vaccination is due and allows recording of immunisation data.

Background

Information on primary immunisation is recorded in the Scottish Immunisation Recall System (SIRS), which covers the fourteen NHS boards in Scotland.  Grampian, Orkney and Shetland were previously part of the Grampian Immunisation and Record System (GIRS).  However, as from December 2002 the SIRS and GIRS systems amalgamated into a Scottish system.

Who uses SIRS?

The two principal groups of users are health professionals (such as health visitors, GPs, and community paediatricians) and staff responsible for immunisation administration within an NHS Board.

After an immunisation contact has taken place the immunisation details are keyed into the system by administrative staff.

Analyses available

A variety of routine outputs are available to users of SIRS which can be used for local purposes.  Data recorded on SIRS are used to monitor immunisation uptake rates at 12 months, 24 months, 5 years and 6 years.  Immunisation statistics  are published quarterly on the ISD Scotland Website.

Analyses are available at various levels, for example by NHS Board (residence and examination); council area; and Community Health Partnership (CHP).

If you would like to request specific analyses please refer to the contacts page for details.
