Scottish Health Information Service Programme

The Scottish Health Information Service (SHIS) is ISD?s strategy for delivering a Secondary Uses Service (SUS) for the NHS in Scotland.

Objectives 2008/09

Data Warehouse: To deliver an NHSS data Warehouse which holds national and local data, is accessible to authorised customers, and is subject to appropriate information governance
Navigator: To continue to develop and enhance Navigator and roll out to NHS Boards
Workforce and Organisation Development: To develop the analytical workforce to have the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to foster a proactive support service to stakeholders
Information Governance: To undertake a Privacy Impact Assessment of the NHS Data Warehouse in order to identify and mitigate risks to privacy.

Programme Summary

The SHIS will work closely with, and be supported by, the other Programmes within ISD. The SHIS will support the NHS through more timely access to data and information to support clinical governance and audit, performance management, research and surveillance.

The SHIS has a number of dependent projects or work streams:

Corporate data warehouse ? further development of the core data warehouse through increasing the number of data marts, and piloting access to the Scottish Morbidity Record (SMR)01 data held in the data warehouse
Information Governance ? A separate Programme of work within ISD, but a key dependency for SHIS
Development of a new web based bespoke product - Navigator
Workforce and Organisational Development
Communications - internal and external
