Coronary Heart Disease

Statistical Publication Notice

26 June 2007

Emergency admissions for heart attack, unstable angina and stroke January 2005 to September 2006 by month

Introduction

New summary information on emergency hospital admissions, by month, with primary diagnoses involving heart attack, unstable angina or stroke are presented by NHS Board for the period January 2005 to September 2006.

These figures are being added to our web pages following requests for more detailed breakdowns by month of hospital discharges with these diagnoses.

Key Points:

Most NHS boards show a gradual, declining trend in emergency admissions for these three cardiovascular diseases, dealt with as a whole, over the period examined.

SMR01 data for May 2006 onwards are incomplete and any reductions in admissions after this month could simply be from missing data.

Definitions (principal diagnosis):

'Heart attack' includes all cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

'Unstable angina' includes all cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

'Stroke' includes all cases of non-traumatic intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral infarction.
