In 2006 there are only a small number of emergency hospital admissions and no deaths in under 15 year olds as a result of an assault by sharp object. Most emergency hospital admissions (70%) are from young adults aged between 15 and 34 and the numbers then decrease with age (see
table 18,
figure 11 ). A similar pattern is observed in the number of deaths, although the decrease in the number of deaths in older victims is more gradual up to the 45 to 65 year old group.

Males are almost 20 times more likely to be admitted to hospital as an emergency and 8.5 times more likely to be killed as a result of an assault by a sharp object than women (see
table 19 ).
