Alcohol related hospital statistics 
INTRODUCTION
This publication presents the latest information on alcohol-related discharges. Information is available for:
-
2006/07 for alcohol-related discharges from general acute hospitals
-
2005/06 for alcohol-related discharges from psychiatric hospitals
KEY POINTS
-
In 2006/07, there were 41,651 discharges from acute general hospitals with an alcohol-related diagnosis, a rate of 762 per 100,000 population. Over the last five years, the discharge rate has increased by 7 per cent from 710 per 100,000 population in 2002/03.

Of those discharges with an alcohol-related diagnosis (41,651) almost half (20,405) are for people aged 50 year old and over.

In 2005/06, there were 3,398 psychiatric inpatient discharges with an alcohol-related diagnosis (main diagnosis), a rate of 64 per 100,000 population.

In 2005/06, of all psychiatric inpatient discharges with alcohol-related conditions (4,183) around a third were for people aged 50 years old and over.
