NHSScotland Workforce Information

Medical and dental

This section provides information on the medical and dental workforce in NHSScotland.  The figures are sourced from the medical and dental (MEDMAN) system which includes information on all medical and dental staff working in hospitals, the community and public sector and from the Practitioner Contractor Database (PCD), Management Information and Dental Accounting System (MIDAS) .

Information is presented by staff group, country of qualification, specialty, grade, age group, gender, contract type, NHS Board and region.

Throughout information is presented as a headcount or whole time equivalent (WTE).  WTE adjusts headcount staff figures to take account of part-time staff.

Information available includes;

Medical and dental services have been changing over the years to meet the needs of an ever evolving health service.  In recent years the medical workforce in particular, has been involved in redesigning services to meet the changing demands which is evidenced in the introduction of new roles.  An example of this is the introduction of physicians assistants

The same is also true within the dental workforce where roles have been broadened as well as new staff groups being introduced, oral health therapists/practitioners is one example.  Dental nurses within this section can now also be explicitly identified.

Medical and dental trend

The chart below shows that the number of  medical and dental staff [907Kb] working within NHSScotland has been increasing over the past 10 years.  The number (headcount) of medical staff (including GPs) has increased by 30.4% from 11,767 for year ending 30th September 1997 to 15,349 for year ending 30th September 2007.  A similar pattern can also be found for dentists, 23.3% increase from 2,367 for year ending 30th September 1997 to 2,919 for 30th September 2007.

Medical and dental staff in post

The number of medical and dental staff (including GPs) in post at 30th September 2007 is 15,349 (headcount) an increase of 750 (5.1%) from 30th September 2006.

Hospital, Community and Public Health Services (HCHS) Medical and Dental

The number of Hospital, Community and Public Health Services (HCHS) medical and dental staff (WTE) has increased by 7.5% from 10,160.9 for 30th September 2006 to 10,919.9 for year ending 30th September 2007.  The corresponding headcount showed an increase of 5.6% from 11,201 for 30th September 2006 to 11,823 for 30th September 2007.

Consultants

Latest data available 31st March 2008 - last updated 24th June 2008.

The number of consultants (WTE) has increased by 0.5% from 3,801.7 for 30th September 2007 to 3,822.1 for quarter ending 31st March 2008.  The corresponding headcount showed an increase of 0.4% from 4,035 for 30th September 2007 to 4,051 for 31st March 2008.

The consultant establishment has increased by 197 (4.8%) to 4,325 since 30th September 2006.   The number of consultants in post increased by 188 (4.9%) to 4,035 and the number of consultant vacancies was 290, an increase of 9 from 30th September 2006.  The consultant vacancy rate was 6.7% at 30th September 2007, compared with 6.8% at 30th September 2006.

Consultant contract

Latest data available 30th September 2007 - last updated 29th January 2008.

The number of consultants (WTE) who have opted into the new contract at 30th September 2007 is 3,426.8.  The total number of programmed activities (all PAs) across all specialties at 30th September 2007 is 39,663.4.  On average this equates to 11.6 programmed activities.

Doctors in training compliance with new deal

The tables below summarise compliance rates across NHS Boards with the New Deal for Doctors in Training. For the latest rota period (covering August 2007 - January 2008) the compliance rate for Scotland stands at 98.4%. There are several reasons for non compliance:

  • exceeding the maximum average of 56 contracted hours per week.
  • failing to take the minimum amount of natural breaks.
  • exceeding the maximum contracted hours in an individual shift.
  • failing to meet at least 75% of rest periods.

In general, non compliance is due to the latter 3 reasons i.e. the majority of rotas do not exceed the maximum average contracted hours. Based only on hours worked, 99.9% of Doctors in Training do not exceed the maximum average of 56 contracted hours per week. 

New deal - chart

The chart above shows that the percentage of doctors in training compliant with the New Deal (45.0 KB) working within NHSScotland has been increasing over the past seven years. The number (headcount) of compliant doctors in training has increased by 26.9% from 3,991 for the rota period August 2003 - January 2004 to 5,063 for the rota period August 2007 - January 2008. In the same period the total number of doctors in training increased by 5.4% from 4,882 to 5,144.
