Dental Workforce Project

ISD collects and analyses data relating to all dentists involved in NHS treatment in Scotland. This includes data collected by

the Practitioner Services Division on all General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) registered to provide NHS treatment.
Information Services Division (ISD) on dentists directly employed by NHS Scotland in hospital and community services.
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) on dentists undergoing training.

ISD are working in collaboration with NES and the Scottish Executive to improve and increase the use that can be made of this information for workforce planning.

The latest report was published on 29^th June 2006. It is a joint publication between ISD and NES, which provides an update to the analysis and modelling of the dental workforce, including:

headcount of dentists by Hospital, Community and General Dental Service
workforce characteristics of the General Dental Service
outputs of a supply model predicting numbers of General Dental Pratitioners (GDP)
outputs of a utilisation model predicting required numbers of GDPs
comparison of the supply and utilisation model outputs to show if there is a shortage of GDPs relative to historic levels of service provision and whether the situation is expected to improve or not with time.
