Key Clinical Indicators for Sexual Health: Population Based Indicator Report 2008

This is the third of the population based KCI reports and looks at chlamydia, male and female sterilisation, termination of pregnancy, hepatitis B vaccination in men who have sex with men (MSM) and long acting reversible methods of contraception (LARC).

The publication of this report has been brought forward from February as a number of the indicators relate to the NHS QIS standards for Sexual Health Services. In making the data available at an earlier date, it is intended that NHS boards can use these data as part of the evidence required for the NHS QIS visits.

Key Clinical Indicators for Sexual Health

Respect and Responsibility: Strategy and Action Plan for Improving Sexual Health  highlighted the need to monitor sexual health service development both nationally and at an NHS Board level. A set of key clinical indicators has been developed for this purpose. The KCIs are managed by DASH and are part of the wider quality framework for sexual health. The indicators helped to inform the development of the Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) Sexual Health Clinical Standards and also the National Sexual Health System (NaSH) with its associated datasets, developed by the National Clinical Dataset Development Programme (NCDDP ).

The KCIs are reported upon on an annual basis - the date of publication is in brackets.

NHS boards can use these reports to monitor their own progress against previous years and in comparison with others. Those that are performing well are encouraged to share their expertise.
