Dental Statistics

INTRODUCTION

Dental related information about the General, Community and Hospital Dental Services as well as workforce data are available in this section of ISD’s website.
This release covers the publication of quarterly registration figures for the quarter ending 31 December 2007.

KEY POINTS

There was an increase to the registration data between quarter ending 30 September 2007 and 31 December 2007.  The percentage of the Scottish population registered with a dentist is 71.7% and 50.7% for children and adults respectively. This is an increase from 69.9% for children and 48.6% for adult registered at September 2007.

INTERPRETATION

Registration data is based on location (postcode) of the dental practice.
 
Since April 2006, patients remain registered with a dentist for 3 years before their registration lapses (if they don’t attend the practice) whereas previously they would lapse after 15 months.
 
Childsmile – the national oral health demonstration programmes, were introduced in 2006/07.  This is a pilot for a new way of delivering preventative dentistry to children.  While ‘Childsmile’ children are seen in dental practices, at present there is no requirement for these children to be registered with a dental practitioner.
 
Children are defined as those aged under 18.  Adults are defined as those aged 18 and over.

DETAILED FINDINGS

Every NHS Board observed an increase in percentage of population registered. This ranged from NHS Orkney, up from 37.7% to 41.8%, to NHS Grampian, up from   35.1% to 35.9%.
