Alcohol Interventions

Statistical Publication Notice

29 September 2009

Alcohol Brief Interventions 2008-09.

INTRODUCTION

The publication presents the total number of brief interventions carried out by Health Boards during 2008/09 in accordance with the HEAT H4 target.  The target states that Health Boards should carry out screenings in three priority settings, using an appropriate screening tool, and followed by an alcohol brief intervention where required. Both the screening and the brief intervention (if applicable) are delivered in line with national guidance, which is based on SIGN 74 Guidelines*.

The figures relate to a three year target, which is developmental in its first year.

The total number of interventions (across all settings) is presented at Scotland level and by Health Board.

* The management of harmful drinking and alcohol dependence in primary care, Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2003.  Available at http://www.sign.ac.uk/guidelines/fulltext/74/index.html

KEY POINTS

The total number of brief interventions carried out in Scotland in 2008-09 was 26,499.

INTERPRETATION

It should be noted that the target is developmental in its first year and has a three-year trajectory.  The target for each Board is based on the proportion of the population over 16 estimated to be at risk. During 2008/9 Boards are expected to develop delivery arrangements and data collection systems. Boards are at different stages in this process. The past year’s results for the Boards reflect this.
