National Reference Files

Computerised patient based data collected by ISD Scotland is subject to data validation process. This process includes the checking of data items against an agreed set of reference files (e.g. ICD10 and OPCS4 coding classifications, Postcodes and Consultant specialty files). The content of the files are monitored and updated as necessary.

The standard Data Validation Reference files (e.g. consultants, GPs, location etc) are updated on the website on a weekly basis. Other files (e.g. ICD10/OPCS4) are updated monthly.

Reference files are updated by users via the submission of forms to ISD.

This version of the files holds a combination of both the the updated Ethnic Group descriptions to fall in line with New Scottish Census Ethnicity Categories 2011 and the the 2001 Ethnicity codes and descriptions which will become invalid from 31/03/2011. These new codes/descriptions are optional in systems from 01/04/2010 and mandatory by 01/04/2011. Please note that the new Ethnic Group description field holds 70 characters, an increase from the current 40 characters. Anybody using the SCI Reference update program with CLoVE, PCSMR or other related products will have to update the description field in the reference database to 70 characters before updating with the new file
