The Changing Functional Needs and Dependency of People Living in Care Homes: Evidence from use of the Indicator of Relative Need in Scotland

The report describes a project to obtain objective evidence on the functional or dependency levels of care home residents at a point in time and to compare the findings with similar data collected in the past. It describes how the project was carried out, drawing on Indicator of Relative Need (IoRN) data collected routinely by 65 care homes and 5 extra care housing facilities in Scotland. The main analyses presented include a profile of the variation in residents in terms of their functional needs and a comparison with earlier data to show how these needs have changed over time. This report will be of particular interest to organisations involved in both care delivery and the commissioning of care for older people.
